Finca Matumbal is a self sustainable farm on Isla Colon located 5 minutes outside of Bocas Town with water and road access. The property is 45 hectares/111 acres with a bamboo reforestation project which was started in the year 2000.
There are 5 houses on the farm with nearly a mile of private paved road and a private lagoon. There is a mechanics shop with car lift, boat house and lift and 5 containers of storage space as well. The farm is connected to city electric and there is a new 40kw Olympian Generator serving as backup. Rainwater catchment systems are in place on entire farm and city water access is available at the front entrance as well.
With infrastructure already in place Finca Matumbal is prime for development. There are building sites at the private lagoon, on the hilltops with amazing ocean views and in the jungle as well. The goal of Matumbal has always been to build sustainably and find ways to live within our natural environment and reap the healthy benefits.
The Bamboo Reforestation Project benefits include no taxes on production, import and export advantages, no property taxes.
Hardwood production is at 40% with continued growth.
Along with the reforestation project Finca Matumbal strives for a sustainable way of life. Hundreds of coconut palms were planted 20 plus years ago which provide great health benefits. Fruit bearing trees such as mango, papaya, guanabana, lime, banana and plaintain are also plentiful on the farm. Other trees include avocado, water apple, hardwood trees and bamboo ready for harvest.
An herb garden and free range chicken farm have also been started this year. Tomatoes, melons, greens and local root vegetables have all taken very well. The free range chicken farm already provides fresh eggs every day. By hatching eggs as well the amount of chickens and their production is growing in a sustainable way.
